CMON's SDCC Exclusives: A Betrayal to Loyal Fans and Backers?

In recent years, CMON has built a reputation for creating some of the most beloved board games in the industry. Titles like Zombicide , Dune , Cyberpunk 2077 , Cthulhu: Death May Die , Arcadia Quest and Marvel United have garnered a dedicated fanbase, many of whom have supported these games through Kickstarter campaigns and retail purchases. However, CMON's recent decision to make exclusive content for these games available only at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has sparked significant outrage among its loyal supporters. The Exclusivity Issue At the heart of the controversy are the exclusive expansions and content for Zombicide: White Death, Cthulhu: Death May Die, and Marvel United. These exclusives include: Zombicide: White Death TMNT Expansion: Featuring comics and Rocksteady and Bebop miniatures for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion. Pokémon Players Cup III Announced

After the success of Players Cup I and Players Cup II, The Pokémon Company has announced Players Cup III.

The Players Cup was created in response to the current COVID-19 Pandemic which prevented Organized League Events from taking place for The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) and Video Games (VGC) including Pokkén Tournament DX and Pokémon Sword & Shield.

Pokémon Players Cup III will run from January through April 2021, and will include both the TCG and VGC.

There will be three separate competitions in the Pokémon Players Cup III, one featuring the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), one featuring the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and one featuring the Pokkén Tournament DX.

Eligible players will earn their places in the Region Qualifiers. To participate, players must have a Pokémon Trainer Club account and have a Player ID by January 18th. Pokémon TCG players also need to log-in to the Pokémon TCG Online between October 18th and January 18th.

Pokémon Sword & Shield

Players will battle in the Pokémon Players Cup III Qualifier to earn a spot for the Region Qualifiers. Video game players need to have linked their Pokémon Trainer Club account to their Nintendo account before the Pokémon Players Cup III Qualifier begins.

Qualifiers

Pokémon Players Cup III Qualifier will take place from January 14th through January 17th. The top players by rating zone, will advance to be able to register for the Pokémon Players Cup III Region Qualifiers.

  • North America rating zone (US and Canada): 256 players
  • Europe rating zone (Europe): 256 players
  • Latin America rating zone (Latin America and Caribbean): 256 players
  • Oceania rating zone (Australia and New Zealand): 128 players

Regional Qualifier

In March players will compete in a Region Qualifier (based on rating zone, excluding South Africa and Russia). Each Region Qualifier will be a separate double-elimination bracket taking place over two weekends.

  • March 20: Double-elimination bracket play until 16 players remain in each region
  • March 27: Bracket play continues until 4 players remain in each region

Global Finals

The Global Finals will include 16 players (4 from each Region Qualifier). The finals will be a new double-elimination bracket, and players will be able to submit a new team list. The Global Finals will be played on April 10­th and 11th.

Pokémon TCG

Players will compete in tournaments during a qualifying period in the Pokémon TCG Online. The Players Cup III will continue to use the new feature first rolled out in Players Cup II.

All eligible players will have 50 Tournament Keys added to their Pokémon TCG Online account. Tournament Rep points will be awarded as follows.

  • 1st place: 5 points
  • 2nd place: 3 points
  • 3rd & 4th place: 1 point each
  • 5th–8th place: 0 points

Qualifiers

In the first phase, players will compete to reach the top of their rating zone's Pokémon TCG Online Tournament Rep leaderboard in the Standard format for the month of February 2021. The top players in each rating zone will advance and be able to register for the Pokémon Players Cup III Region Qualifiers.

  • North America rating zone (US and Canada): 256 players
  • Europe rating zone (Europe): 256 players
  • Latin America rating zone (Latin America and Caribbean): 256 players
  • Oceania rating zone (Australia and New Zealand): 128 players

Players will be required to register their deck list online before the first Region Qualifier date and will need an account with both Discord and Battlefy to participate. Matches will be best of three and will use the Standard format.

Global Finals

The Global Finals will include 16 players (4 from each Region Qualifier). The finals will be a new double-elimination bracket, and players will be able to submit a new deck list. The Global Finals will be played April 10th and 11th.

Pokkén Tournament DX

Players will compete in Online Qualifiers within their region. All players will be required to register online before the qualification date and will need an account with both Discord and Battlefy to participate.

Regional Qualifiers

Players will be able to register for the Pokémon Players Cup III Region Qualifiers. Registration will be capped.

  • North America rating zone (US and Canada): 128 Players
  • Europe rating zone (Europe): 128 Players
  • Oceania rating zone (Australia and New Zealand): 64 Players

In March, players will then compete in Region Qualifiers within their region (based on rating zone, excluding Latin America, South Africa, and Russia). Each Region Qualifier will be a separate double-elimination bracket taking place over two weekends. Players will be required to register online before the qualification date and will need an account with both Discord and Battlefy to participate.


Matches will be best of three and will use the Basic Battle 1v1 Format.

  • March 20: Bracket play until 16 players remain in each region
  • March 27: Bracket play continues until the below numbers of players remain in each region
    • North America: 4 players
    • Europe: 3 players
    • Oceania: 1 player

Global Finals

The finals will include eight players who have advanced from the Region Qualifiers. The finals will be a new double-elimination bracket. The Global Finals will be played April 10th and 11th.
