CMON's SDCC Exclusives: A Betrayal to Loyal Fans and Backers?

Image
In recent years, CMON has built a reputation for creating some of the most beloved board games in the industry. Titles like Zombicide , Dune , Cyberpunk 2077 , Cthulhu: Death May Die , Arcadia Quest and Marvel United have garnered a dedicated fanbase, many of whom have supported these games through Kickstarter campaigns and retail purchases. However, CMON's recent decision to make exclusive content for these games available only at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has sparked significant outrage among its loyal supporters. The Exclusivity Issue At the heart of the controversy are the exclusive expansions and content for Zombicide: White Death, Cthulhu: Death May Die, and Marvel United. These exclusives include: Zombicide: White Death TMNT Expansion: Featuring comics and Rocksteady and Bebop miniatures for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion. This expansion is only available at SDCC, but was highly requested by backers during the entire campaign. Godzilla Expansion for Cthulhu: D

Featured Review @FarCornersS Team Genesis #1 @BaltimoreComics

While at Baltimore Comic-Con I meet Lincoln Farquharson the Editor-In-Chief at FarCorners Studios an indy comic company who is just getting their feet wet. Well I was fortunate enough to read the first issue of Team Genesis written by Farquharson with art by Art Gutierrez and I'm pleased to review it here. It was nice talking to Lincoln as well, and learned a little about the time it takes to make the comic, the troubles they have had, and the fact the original premise was actually for a cartoon series not a comic. If you would like to know more check out their Website, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Also if you get a chance to go to the Con this weekend, drop by their booth and pickup a copy of issue #1 for $3, or get it signed for $5, and both come with a collectors Magnet.

See the Review Rating Overview page for more information on how I rate each comic

Cover & Solicit 5/5

This issues cover is by interior artist Art Gutierrez. He has a very artistic style and the cover is a good representation of the artwork in the issue.

Art, Colors & Inking 5/5

Wow! Just Wow! It's rare to see an artist like Gutierrez not only with an Indy company but even with the Big 3. Why? Because they are normally the ones commissioned for Covers only. Gutierrez does a great job of creating a realistic painted style very reminiscent of Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau and Stjepan Sejic. Every page is beautiful. The issue was supposed to be longer but with art like this I can accept a little delay as long as the art doesn't suffer, or you have to get a stand-in artist.

Layout & Flow 4/5

For being a first issue the did a good job of pacing and story building. I do have one fault and that's the fact we jump right in the action with two of the main characters. There seems to be a bond but we don't know it yet. I feel future issues will expand on this. Gutierrez also does an excellent job of pacing and flow of the panels matching the action to the script nicely. I did have a slight issue with the dialogue and internal thoughts but I believe this had to do with the original story being written for a cartoon not a comic. Instead of using the standard monologue or internal dialogue, the thought bubble just kinda came off weird. But again a minor gripe.

Story 4/5

The series is written by Lincoln Farquharson. He does a great job building a unique story in a all to common genre. We are introduced to two individuals who work for a covert corporation. It seems they are being tasked with retrieving a certain individual before he is taken to Quantico. Lincoln does a decent job of showing the two characters have a past while keeping the pace of the story going. Next we are dropped right into the action with the duo intercepting the transport but not before another group intervenes. I don't want to give too much away so go check it out yourself.

Verdict - 4.4 (9/10)

We need more Indy comics that are of this quality. All too often certain books get press not because of the quality of the book but the name associated with it. This book however should be able to stand on it's own merit, and IMO does. Lincoln Farquharson does a good job creating a new unique story with an all too common genre, and Art Gutierrez's work is breathtakingly beautiful. I hope this new company can get some support because I for one want to read issue #2.
