Red Lanterns #24 - Lights Out, Part Four: Blood Brothers

“LIGHTS OUT” part four! Can the Lanterns cooperate with each other long enough to defeat Relic? If Hal Jordan thought Guy Gardner was difficult before, just wait till he meets Guy Gardner—RED LANTERN!

Hal Jordan Snaps

Bleez threatens to tell the rest of the Red Lantern Corps that Guy Gardner is a spy, but Guy brushes her off, reminding her that he defeated Atrocitus and that she should be afraid of him. Proving his point, Guy calls all of the Red Lanterns together, and gives Bleez a platform to tell all. She’s too scared to do so, but Guy tells the Red Lanterns the truth anyway. He also explains that he’s sick of being betrayed, so he’s truly one of them now. Right on cue, Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns show up to ask for help. The Red Lanterns attack, and even Guy is pissed enough at Hal to deck him. Hal gets through to Guy, though, and the Red Lanterns agree to help stop Relic in exchange for their own sector. Meanwhile, the Butcher-infused Atrocitus revels in his new power…until Kyle Rayner shows up. The Butcher leaves the angry Atrocitus behind to join its brethren within Kyle. At the Source Wall, Relic is trying to break through, and when Kyle and the Guardians arrive…they offer to help.

This issue features the triumphant return of Bleez ass shots, as well as one of the dumbest supervillain names in recent memory: “the Atrocity Butcher.” Other than that, Red Lanterns #24 was a great issue, and a fine piece of the “Lights Out” crossover.

Far and away, the best moment was Guy scaring the living shit out of Bleez. He didn’t even have to physically threaten her; he did it with mere words, and the look of terror on her face was priceless. Even more ballsy was Guy admitting to the Red Lanterns that he was a plant, and explaining to them exactly why he was abandoning the Green Lantern Corps. (We’ll see if it lasts!) I also laughed at Hal’s grumbling about Guy’s vicious sucker punch as a mere Tuesday. Keeping up the rivalry alongside their deep friendship really makes Hal and Guy more human characters than just superhero tropes. Finally, the Atrocitus scenes didn’t really do much for me, to be honest. We all knew from the get-go that Kyle would snag the Butcher anyway, and Atrocitus’s threat that Kyle’s name would be added to “the list” sounded like the grumbling of an angsty teenager.
