Cover & Solicit 4/5

We get a single cover drawn by Stjepan Sejic (Witchblade, Cyber Force and Army of Darkness) featuring Witchblade, the bearer of The Darkness "Jackie Estacado" and Tom Judge. This wasn't the original cover they solicited but it's still pretty cool. I do however with Witchblade and Jackie made an appearance.

Art, Colors & Inking 5/5

This issues art was done by Jung-Geun Yoon (Boom's Deathmatch). The art in this issue was amazing and Yoon's colors and "painted" style gives the issue a really slick appearance. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but by the end of the issue I was in love. The detail that Yoon puts into the facial expressions and the Darklings is just amazing. The way Yoon draws the fight scenes was outstanding as well, everything seemed fluid and unrushed.

Layout & Flow 4/5

I haven't read any Artifacts issues or any of Top Cow's other series that relate to it. Therefore I know very little about the creation of this new world we live in or the thirteen mystical artifacts. I did do a little research beforehand and the recap at the beginning of the issue was nice to have as well. The issue itself I feel did a decent job of being new reader friendly, introducing us to two of the characters and giving a little background. If each issue does this it's a good way to get new readers involved without having to read every back issue or the entire story arc resulting in the new universe.

Story 5/5

The issue is written by Ron Marz (Green Lantern, Witchblade, and Silver Surfer) who does an excellent job telling th estory. This issue picks up with Rafael, the new kid picked up by Tom Judge, working in the church. He meets Tilly Grimes for the first time and once introductions are out of the way the story really gets going. I like how Marz wrote the first meeting of these two characters. You get to have a feel of who they are, and that is especially beneficial to me since I haven't ever read an issue before. We soon find ourselves in the middle of a Darkling battle with Judge and Angelus. Marz does a great job with the dialogue between the characters while keeping the pace going. While not much happens in the way of progression, I feel it was a good jumping on point for new readers. It was simple, exciting and to the point. In the end we see Rafael ask "Is this a pretty typical day", and Judge answers "I don't think there's anything typical about what just happened here." It's writing like this that makes you want to go out and pick up the next issue. I definitely recommend adding this issue to your Pull-List
