CMON's SDCC Exclusives: A Betrayal to Loyal Fans and Backers?

Image
In recent years, CMON has built a reputation for creating some of the most beloved board games in the industry. Titles like Zombicide , Dune , Cyberpunk 2077 , Cthulhu: Death May Die , Arcadia Quest and Marvel United have garnered a dedicated fanbase, many of whom have supported these games through Kickstarter campaigns and retail purchases. However, CMON's recent decision to make exclusive content for these games available only at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has sparked significant outrage among its loyal supporters. The Exclusivity Issue At the heart of the controversy are the exclusive expansions and content for Zombicide: White Death, Cthulhu: Death May Die, and Marvel United. These exclusives include: Zombicide: White Death TMNT Expansion: Featuring comics and Rocksteady and Bebop miniatures for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion. This expansion is only available at SDCC, but was highly requested by backers during the entire campaign. Godzilla Expansion for Cthulhu: D

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor #1

Offering shocks, surprises, and galaxy-shaking revelations, seasoned TARDIS pilot Robbie Morrison (Drowntown, The Authority, 2000AD, Nikolai Dante) and New York Times-bestselling artist Dave Taylor (Batman: Death by Design; 2000AD) mark the start of their first five-issue run by diving headfirst into the console room and pulling all the levers they can – spinning the new Doctor off to his most challenging destination yet!

Freshly regenerated and with a new head full of unanswered questions, the Doctor (as played by Peter Capaldi) whisks Clara Oswald (as played by Jenna Coleman) away to a strange and distant world.

Clara thought she was in for an evening of marking essays on the Metaphysical Poets, followed by going out on a date – or at least trying to. You know, normal stuff.

Instead, she’s facing down exotic flora and fauna in her best dress, backing up the Doctor on a trek through traumatically alien undergrowth – and she doesn’t even know what the Doctor is searching for, or what will try to kill them should they find it!

New Face! New Doctor! New Beginning! Get in on the ground floor of this amazing ongoing series!

Art, Colors & Inking 4/5

This issue drawn by Dave Taylor (2000AD, Judge Dredd, Batman: Shadow of the Bat). I like Taylor's style and he does an excellent job of drawing the Doctor. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Clara who really doesn't look like her real-life counterpart. There are also occasional moments where things look a little disproportionate, example the Doctors head seems too big at times. Otherwise his detail is great and the color work by Hi-Fi is beautiful.

Layout & Flow 5/5

For the first issue it was pretty easy to follow. You can tell BBC and Titan are working close together as the events in this issue take place appropriately after the current events in the TV show. With that said this issue still stand on it's own adding additional story to the mythos. My curiosity would be if they will mention events from the comics on the show, or if like past iterations of the comic it will be considered off-cannon.

Story 4/5

The Twelfth Doctor is written by Robbie Morrison (2000 AD, Judge Dredd Magazine). The Twelfth Doctor's story continues his adventure with Clara Oswald. At the start of the issue we find a scientist who is investigating an anomaly in the planet. It turns out the planet seems to have come to life and he gets sucked down into a bed of lava. We next find the Doctor and Clara ready to visit frozen planet where Clara wants to learn how to Ski. Unfortunately their winter wonderland trip is cut short when the planet they arrive on is now a tropical forest. It seems a rich alien has converted the planet in plans of his wedding, but something is amiss. It's up to the Doctor and Clara to solve the mystery.

Verdict - 4.3 (8.5/10) - (Buy Doctor Who) SAVE 10%

I enjoyed this issue and enjoy how they are building on the current Doctor's story. Robbie Morrison does a great job with this story and adds little bits of the events happening in the TV show to keep it cohesive. I also enjoyed Dave Taylor's art with a few exceptions, and can't wait to see more. If your a Whovian this is a must read book.
