A small black sphere contains all the magic that exists past, present, and future. Without it, two worlds would not survive. The sphere has been protected for centuries by a spell that was believed unbreakable. A common man in the world of magic discovers the spell has been breeched and a small chip of the black sphere has been stolen.

It is thought a piece of sphere so small as to be unseen by the naked eye would be enough crush all mankind. Someone has taken enough to fill the palm of one’s hand and fled from the world of magic into the world of man and only the very common Asa Stonethrow can find him. Asa thought saving two worlds was his great burden, until he meets a girl.

The world we know is at risk because the world we don’t see, the one that makes ours possible, is on the brink of destruction. Marc Silvestri, the co-creator of THE DARKNESS and WITCHBLADE and the creator of CYBER FORCE, presents a new fantasy adventure series set in both worlds in which we live. Cover & Solicit 5/5

This issue has 4 covers. Cover A is by the legendary Marc Silvestri, Cover B by Stjepan Sejic (Aphrodite IX), Cover C by Sumeyye Kesgin who also provides the interiors and Cover D is the B&W Retail Incentive cover by Silvestri. All four covers are beautifully done.

Art, Colors & Inking 5/5

The art for this book is by newcomer Sumeyye Kesgin. I really like her style and is one of the reasons I picked up the FCBD issue. Her art is slightly cartoon like and fits the humor and fun of the issue. Colors are provided by Betsy Gonia (Witchblade) and she is proving her worth at Top Cow, not only in the editorial department but her colors are outstanding. Everything comes out vibrant and easy to read.

Layout & Flow 4/5

Being a first issue the flow of the issue was pretty good. There was the normal catch up at the beginning in-case you missed the FCBD issue #0. The only downfall to the issue is that it picks up right from the last issue after a small interlude of the events leading up to what we see in issue #0, so if you didn't know there was an issue #0 you might feel like you missed something. Otherwise Silvestri's story and the art team of Kesgin and Gonia are spot on and easy to follow.

Story 5/5

Marc Silvestri (Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine, Cyber Force) brings us a brand new adventure for Top Cow. This time its a trip in the realm of mysticism and magic. Issue #1 picks up showing the events that happened before the events in issue #0. We find ourselves in the town of Crystal City in the world of Rune, where we are introduced to a special group of individuals called the Spell Guard and Captain Rave, brother to the lead character Asa. Next we witness the events of the attack that are played out from the Free Comic Book Day issue. Silvestri does an excellent job of outlining the origin and background of the Spell Guard, the characters involved, and the mysterious black spheres. We learn that one of their own, Captain Gore has betrayed them and is stealing a shard of the last black sphere which contains all the magic in existence. Luckily Rave is able to intercept Gore and take back the shard, but before Rave can get it to safety he realizes he can't leave his men behind and entrusts the shard to his loyal steed, man-thing Ba-tu. Silvestri then takes us back to where we left off in issue #0 with Asa. As fate would have it, Ba-tu saves him just in time and orders another Magi Talisman to teleport him to safety. Asa is instructed that he must protect the shard at all costs before being sent off to a new strange land that might just be familiar to us.

Verdict - 4.9 - (10/10) (Buy Rise of the Magi) SAVE 10%

This is a series everyone should check out. With issue #0 being free, it will get you hooked immediately. Marc Silvestri has another winner on his hands with Rise of the Magi and newcomer Sumeyye Kesgin has a very unique and beautiful art style. And with Betsy Gonia on coloring duties how can you go wrong. I personally can't wait to see where this team takes this book and will definitely be adding issue #2 to my pull-list.
