CMON's SDCC Exclusives: A Betrayal to Loyal Fans and Backers?

Image
In recent years, CMON has built a reputation for creating some of the most beloved board games in the industry. Titles like Zombicide , Dune , Cyberpunk 2077 , Cthulhu: Death May Die , Arcadia Quest and Marvel United have garnered a dedicated fanbase, many of whom have supported these games through Kickstarter campaigns and retail purchases. However, CMON's recent decision to make exclusive content for these games available only at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has sparked significant outrage among its loyal supporters. The Exclusivity Issue At the heart of the controversy are the exclusive expansions and content for Zombicide: White Death, Cthulhu: Death May Die, and Marvel United. These exclusives include: Zombicide: White Death TMNT Expansion: Featuring comics and Rocksteady and Bebop miniatures for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion. Cover & Solicit 4/5

This issues cover is drawn by Stjepan Sejic (Witchblade, Cyber Force and Army of Darkness), who also does the interior art and colors. It's a pretty simple cover with Aphrodite XV we saw at the end of the last issue. The art on this cover seems a little rushed and not as smooth as Sejic's past work. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to see the B cover before this review.

Art, Colors & Inking 4/5

For this new arc Sejic has changed his art style. I really loved what he did with his painted style and was looking forward to see how diverse his repertoire was. I really enjoy this style of his as well. My only gripe is in detail level. For example you get a scene with Aphrodite IX and her dragon fighting some mechanized robots (kinda reminded me of the ones from the Matrix), but unfortunately they didn't have enough detail for me. For mechanized art I love seeing all the detail and his fell a little short on that. Otherwise everythigng else looked great.

Layout & Flow 5/5

The flow of this issue was very good as usual. We get a couple cut scenes between the three congruent groups and the hopping around doesn't distract at all. Even the flow of Sejic's fight scenes work well and are easy to follow. I've said it before and it's always nice to see the introduction page so new readers can jump on.

Story 5/5

Matt Hawkins is still taking the reigns of this volume and is doing an excellent job of telling the story, and conveying emotion of the characters. This issue starts a new story arc with Aphrodite IX in the Wastelands trying to find her place. At the start we find the group who were sent to hunt her down watching her and before they can act Aphrodite IX is attacked by robotic squidbots. We discover that Aphrodite XV from last issue is sending them after her predecessor. We also get some additional information on both Mikhail and the Speros and Executor Jezebel and the Gens. I really enjoyed the part where they show how the Gens reproduce, if you would call it that. It's also great to see the combination of present in Cyber Force and future in Aphrodite IX and Matt explains a little of that link in this issue. At the end of the issue we discover not only are their more than two races that survived but their may be a few more Aphrodites that we first thought as well.

Verdict 4.6 (Pre-Order Aphrodite IX #6) SAVE 20%
