Cover & Solicit 4/5

The cover for this issue was drawn by the issue's artist Garry Brown (The Massive, Higher Earth), who does an excellent job of capturing the feel of the comic.

Art, Colors & Inking 3/5

While I really liked the art style of the cover, I didn't care for the interior art as much. Garry Brown does an excellent job showing the characters emotional state, and the action scenes are fluid. I can appreciate the simplicity of his art, and at times there is great detail to it, it's just not an art style I personally like, although others might. I also didn't find the colors done by Lauren Affe (Buzzkill, Five Ghosts) all that appealing, they seemed at times dark and occasionally muddied the art.

Layout & Flow 5/5

I was skeptical going into this issue because I haven't read the prior five issue mini-series, but when I was given the opportunity to review it I went in with an open mind and figured if I was confused I could always get the TPB. I was actually very happy considering I haven't read any past issues, that I found it very easy to follow. Barbiere does a great job not to overwhelm the reader with information they may or may not be aware of yet, and everything just seemed to flow. Also considering this is a standalone issue, it makes it very easy to get involved in the series. After reading the issue I went and picked up the Five Ghosts TPB Vol. 01 Haunting Of Fabian Gray because now wanted to learn more about Fabian Gray and these ghosts that poses him.

Story 5/5

As I mentioned Frank J Barbiere (Dark Horse Presents, Skybreaker) does an excellent job telling the story. This stand alone issue finds Fabian Gray back in Japan at the request of an old ally Hisano. Barbiere does a fine job of using cut scenes to show the history of these two individuals without distracting the reader. When she tells him of a legendary sword name Masamune they set off to acquire it. But the question is whose side is his friend really on? Being a stand alone issue this was just a fun way of showing some back-story and it helps start to round out the character that is Fabian Gray. You get to see him use a few of his ghost, the detective, the vampire and the samurai and the way Barbiere and Brown implement them in the issue works and doesn't distract the reader. I'm going to read the first five issues to get myself ready for issue 7, as this is the type of writing you just can't get enough of. I definitely recommend picking this issue up Wednesday and while your at it, grab the TPB as well.
